Bring Back Japanese at Monta Vista High School

Bring Back Japanese at Monta Vista High School
The Issue
The Fremont Union High School District is in the process of phasing out the Japanese language program at Monta Vista High School. This decision deprives incoming students of the same education given to us current students have taken for granted.
We, the students of the Japanese language program, believe that these decisions should be reversed; this program has been pivotal in our high school lives, creating many close friendships and most importantly, because it helped us explore deeper into the language we love. Also, this program has been in this school for a very long time, and we even have two clubs at our school based on the Japanese language. This includes the Japanese Club, which has been around since the early 2000’s creating a sense of Japanese community on campus. The other being the Japanese National Honor Society(JNHS), which in the past JNHS has participated in Japanese National competitions even flying out of state. Many join these clubs and attend meetings, willing to learn about Japanese language and culture even outside of the class creating unforgettable shared experiences. This is why taking away this opportunity for future students would mean depriving their interests, potential memories, and desire to communicate in a different language.
This upcoming 2024 school year, Japanese Level 1 was not offered as a course option; as unfortunate as that was, we still have countless students signing up for Level 2, willing to skip an important level simply to have the opportunity to continue to learn the language. We students truly care for this program, and we would hate to see the day the language we cherish perish from our school, simply because FUHSD made their own decision.
We are incredibly passionate about the Japanese language program, and we hope that you can help us bring back this language program in Monta Vista High School through combined efforts. Thank you for your time!
