Bring Back “In Living Color”

The Issue

One of the funniest, most entertaining and barrier-breaking shows from my childhood was “In Living Color” produced by Keenan Ivory Wayans. Growing up in Houston, Texas during the early 90’s wasn’t perfect when it came to diversity, but it seems that today we are more divided by color than we were back then, which really doesn’t make sense at this point in American history. I come from a mixed family (my unlcle married a black woman and had two mixed sons, who were my close cousins that I grew up with). We are mostly Northern European, Greek and Italian, but still considered caucasian on legal documents. My siblings and I didn’t see color as something opposite or separate from us, just a different shade of the same skin. In Living Color played in our household every week and I remember countless hours of looking over at my dad laughing hysterically to the point of crying while watching the skits put on by Damon Wayans, Jamie Foxx, Tommy Davidson, Jim Carrey, and the other side-splitting, highly talented cast members. We need to bring back this show to America with the original cast members to help us get through this ‘Great Divide’ plaguing our nation, where a select few in politics, news and television attempted to wedge us further apart solely based on the color of our skin. Most Americans don’t care about what color someone else is. We are all people. We are all Americans. We are all human beings trying to make our way in the world and just be accepted for who we are when we go to work, walk outside, or watch T.V. The time is ripe for all the remaining barriers of racism and separation to be broken down once and for all, and the greatest weapon against this threat is In Living Color!
