Bring Back Hornet Time - Again!

Bring Back Hornet Time - Again!
The Issue
Over the past few years, the Enumclaw High School school district has been making modifications to the master schedule that students must follow. One of the biggest controversies was the removal of "Hornet Time", a 30 minute study hall period on Monday-Thursday, and shrinking it down to just two days out of the week with stricter rules about moving in between classes. This new schedule was called "Extended Second Period", and the limits on days with this 30 minute time slot to do things like make up tests or finish assignments from previous classes was not beneficial to students. This year, the school board has taken an entire new angle by creating an "Academic Focus Week" schedule, which allows this 30 minute period for only 3 days at the end of every month, excluding a few like November and February. They also added a 15 minute homeroom schedule on Mondays only, which causes a disruption in the normal flow of classes, with them getting out at weird times like 9:08 or 11:02. Students now have three different schedule they need to keep track of and also have minimized study time, which impacts the ability for students to maintain workload efficiently. Most students are managing jobs or extracurricular activities after school, and often times don't have time to make up work at home. This "Academic Focus Week" schedule only makes it harder on students to maintain a healthy work-life balance. It isn't just students either, but staff now have to plan accordingly for kids who need to make up tests. With Hornet Time, students could just come in after second period and knock it out, but now they have to wait for the end of the month, and if they happen to miss those 3 days they have to wait even longer. This means some staff may have to take time after or before school starts to plan ahead for kids coming in to make up tests, which isn't efficient at all. With Hornet Time 4 out of 5 days of the week, schoolwork was more manageable for students and staff. This new schedule system is too confusing and inefficient, which is why we are advocating for either the return of Hornet Time or an adjacent schedule change that allows for a study hall every single day of the year, excluding adjusted schedule days and Fridays.
