The Issue

As a dedicated tutor, my heart aches to see the diminishing motivation in my students since the removal of standardized exams like UPSR and PMR in Malaysian schools. The prestigious SPM exam stands as one of the last remaining benchmarks of academic achievement. However, without early exposure to exams, our students lack the motivation and external pressure that often drives them to excel. Children, inherently, do not see the grander picture of education's value. Instead, they thrive in environments that channel their energies towards achieving tangible goals under structured settings like examinations.

The recent policy change to eliminate these exams was done under the belief that it would reduce stress for students. While the intent to shield children from unnecessary stress is commendable, it misses a fundamental truth about life and education. Stress, rather than being inherently negative, is a powerful motivator and an unavoidable aspect of life. By removing stress, we may inadvertently handicap our children in facing future challenges. It is crucial that we prepare children to handle stressful situations by experiencing and managing them safely in the controlled environment of school. Such skills are not just academic but life skills essential for their future success.

We understand the argument against exams, but instead of complete elimination, why not consider reforms that retain their rigorous standards while simultaneously adapting to new educational needs? Perhaps a balance where exams assess not only rote learning but critical thinking, creativity, and practical applications of knowledge can better prepare our children for the modern world.

Incorporating elements of stress through examinations does not mean unrelenting pressure. Instead, it provides stepping stones for children to develop resilience and work ethic. By reinstating these exams with potential modern improvements, we will harness the opportunity to cultivate not just academic excellence but robust, resilient, and well-rounded individuals.

Let us urge the Malaysian Ministry of Education to reconsider their stance and reintroduce these examinations, initiating discussions for a balanced approach that modernizes but does not discard the fundamental tools of evaluation. Your support in signing this petition will be a significant step toward reinstating these pivotal examinations, ensuring our children receive the holistic education they deserve.
