Bring Back Early Access to Mature Games on Steam.

The Issue

Steam has reportedly stopped allowing Early Access releases for games with mature or adult themes, with developers of titles like Heavy Hearts and The Restoration of Aphrodisia receiving rejections for their Early Access applications based on "mature themes". This change, not formally announced by Valve but noted by affected developers in early September 2025, is likely in response to pressure from payment processors like Visa and Mastercard, which have also led to a broader crackdown on sexually explicit content on the platform.

Steam stopped early access for video games with mature themes because, once again, the Card Companies are abusing their power to bully a platform that can't take legal action against a monopoly. After all, the Bill of Rights doesn't protect you from a corporation, so it will affect a business, and then it will affect others.

That is why Steam is falling into a pit; it's these monopolies and corporations that have the power to crush other companies' platforms because there aren't that many laws to protect them.

It affects game developers since they can't release their video games in early access, and players can't purchase them, and then support the developers to complete the game.

Mature themes could be blood, gore, suicide, and drugs, offensive content that could mean literally anything, because people will find everything as a mature theme. We know what mature themes are, but I'm using that as an example since you live in a modern world where people who don't play video games will think everything is mature if it doesn't fit their ideology.

Developers should have the right to choose to present their project in early access with mature themes.

It's bad that developers are getting their accounts deleted and their money stolen by card companies because the developers are making adult games, but they might get their accounts blocked and money stolen because they made violent and gory video games.

If we let this slide, it could lead to more rule changes on the platform and more censorship.

The developers should have the right to publish their video game on Steam in early access with a mature theme because this is their right.
