Bring back California’s G26 cutout US highway shield

Bring back California’s G26 cutout US highway shield

The Issue

The removal of California’s G26 cutout US highway shield marks the loss of a distinctive feature in the state’s road system. For decades, this unique design helped drivers quickly identify US Routes and distinguish them from other highways, especially at a glance in complex freeway environments.

The G26 cutout also reflects California’s historical approach to road signage and regional identity. It was more than a functional marker—it represented a unique design style that set California apart from the standard national shield format. With its replacement by a uniform design, an element of this visual identity has been reduced.

California’s roads reflect both function and identity. Alongside other recognizable state landmarks, the G26 shield contributed to a distinct visual language in roadway design. Preserving or selectively reintroducing this design could help maintain that historical character in appropriate contexts.

I respectfully urge the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to consider preserving remaining G26 cutout shields and evaluating the possibility of reintroducing them in select or historic corridors. Please sign this petition to support preserving this part of California’s road identity and history.
