BRING BACK ACTIVITY @ McDonough High School

The Issue

Who is impacted?

The new extended period system impacts every student and teacher in the building. Clubs that once operated during activity periods, such as Student Government, Mock Trial, and Key Club, now face major barriers. Students without reliable transportation will struggle to attend after-school meetings, effectively excluding them from leadership opportunities, extracurricular experiences, and service hours. Teachers, too, are left with less flexibility to support students during the school day, while also facing longer instructional blocks that are harder to manage effectively.

What is at stake?

Without opportunities to participate in clubs during school hours, students who rely on school-based engagement will miss out on critical experiences that build leadership, teamwork, and community. This creates an equity gap between students who can stay after school and those who cannot. In addition, extended periods risk being unproductive when students finish classwork early but are not allowed to use the time for other meaningful tasks. This not only decreases academic engagement but also fosters frustration for students and teachers alike.

Why is now the time to act?

As the new school year begins, students and teachers are already expressing confusion and dissatisfaction with the extended period system. If this continues unchecked, it could weaken student involvement in clubs, lower motivation, and reduce the sense of community within the school. By revisiting the schedule now and restoring a flexible period similar to Herd Time, the administration has an opportunity to strengthen academic success, extracurricular involvement, and overall student well-being. Making this adjustment early in the year will prevent deeper negative effects and demonstrate responsiveness to the needs of the entire school community.
