Bring an Outdoor strength training area to Olympia

The Issue

Olympia is an active city. Every day, residents run, walk, skate, and cycle around Capitol Lake through Marathon and Heritage Park. This recreation corridor is one of the most heavily used public spaces in our community.

Yet despite this level of activity, Olympia does not currently have a dedicated outdoor strength training area. For a community that values health, recreation, and accessible public space, this represents a clear opportunity for improvement.

I am proposing the installation of a outdoor strength training area at Isthmus Park — city-owned land that already supports active recreation such as the pump track and seasonal skating rink. Its central location and proximity to recreational spaces makes it a prime candidate

A well-designed strength training area could include:

Pull-up bars at multiple heights
parallel bars
Stall bars / gymnastics ladder
Monkey bars
Ring or climbing rope anchor points
Safe, accessible surfacing

Outdoor strength training areas are common in cities across the United States and internationally. They are simple, durable, and low-maintenance. Integrating strength infrastructure in this area would support runners, walkers, youth athletes, older adults, and anyone seeking accessible ways to build strength outdoors.

Similar installations in nearby communities demonstrate both feasibility and public interest in this type of amenity. This proposal does not call for buildings or major development — only well-engineered equipment that complements the character and existing use of the park. If Isthmus Park is not the most appropriate site, another suitable central location within Olympia’s park system could be considered.

By signing this petition, you are expressing support for exploring the development of an outdoor strength training area in Olympia’s park system, with Isthmus Park as a preferred location.

Let’s continue investing in public spaces that promote health, accessibility, and community connection.
