Bring an End to the Rotten Criminal Justice System in the Philippines
The Issue
As well said by Roxane Gay an author from Times New Square,"All too often, when we see injustices, both great and small, we think, That’s terrible, but we do nothing. We say nothing. We let other people fight their own battles. We remain silent because silence is easier. Qui tacet consentire videtur is Latin for ‘Silence gives consent.’ When we say nothing, when we do nothing, we are consenting to these trespasses against us".
The Philippines is a nation full with breathtaking places, delectable food, and hospitable people who always have a warm smile on their faces. However, darkness is also gradually engulfing the radiance, and everyone seems to be dazzled by the beauty. In 1967, a woman named Lucila Lalu was found dismembered in Manila, Philippines. Investigators struggled to solve the case, but eventually identified her through fingerprints. Her common-law husband and three lovers were suspects, but one of them confessed to the crime, only to later retract his statement. The case remains unsolved, with Lalu's head still missing.
It is said that money is powerless to achieve anything, not even justice. In reality money, power, and position seems to be the most powerful weapon in the world because this is where the world revolves. Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez, students at a university in the Philippines, were kidnapped by men working for the mayor of Calauan. The mayor wanted Sarmenta as a "gift" and Gomez was taken because he was a witness. They were taken to a farm where Sarmenta was assaulted by the mayor and his men, while Gomez was beaten. Later, both were shot and killed. The culprits were caught, including the mayor, and sentenced to life in prison. Despite concerns of the mayor's release in 2019, he died in prison in 2021. Many still worry if similar crimes happened under his leadership.
The Philippines may be too lovely, but it still hurts and scars you deeply. Behind that beauty there is agony. These days, the world was far too cruel for anyone, but it doesn't mean that we have to stand there and do nothing at all. As a Filipino and as a concerned global citizens, let's put an end to this decaying justice system not just for the Philippines but also for the whole world. No matter who you are,our voices matters because every small steps can already make a huge difference. It all starts with you,me and all of us
