Many children and adults who rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) are unable to independently send text messages on smartphones and tablets.

We are calling on Apple and AAC software developers to create a system-wide AAC keyboard for iPhone and iPad that allows users to communicate using symbols, core vocabulary, word prediction, and speech output directly within apps like Messages, email, and social media.

For AAC users who cannot spell independently or use voice dictation, texting is currently not accessible. While AAC apps such as Grid are powerful and widely used in schools, they do not integrate into iPhone messaging in a way that allows truly independent communication.

One example is a middle school student entering eighth grade who has autism, an intellectual disability, and a progressive mitochondrial disease. She successfully uses Grid on her school iPad to communicate. However, she cannot independently text family and friends because there is no AAC keyboard available on iPhone.

This is not an isolated situation. Thousands of AAC users face the same barrier every day.

We are asking for:

A system-wide AAC keyboard for iOS
Symbol-based communication with core vocabulary support
Word prediction designed for AAC users
Speech output before sending messages
Compatibility with Messages, email, and third-party apps
This feature would provide meaningful independence, safety, and social connection for AAC users who are currently excluded from one of the most common forms of communication in modern life.

Communication is a fundamental human right. People who rely on AAC deserve equal access to the tools that allow them to connect with others.

We urge Apple and AAC developers to work together to close this accessibility gap.
