The Issue

After Nearly 20 Years, Lakeview Is Losing a Grocery Store. Let's Make Sure What Comes Next Serves Everyone.
Lakeview is one of Chicago's most vibrant and densely populated neighborhoods — a community built on walkability, strong local businesses, and a diverse mix of residents who take pride in where they live. But when Whole Foods closes its doors at 3640 N. Halsted St after nearly two decades, it won't just leave behind an empty storefront. It will leave a gap that thousands of residents will feel every single week.

Lakeview doesn't lack grocery stores. It lacks affordable ones.

The options that remain in our immediate area skew heavily toward premium pricing, forcing a large portion of our neighbors — families, seniors, young professionals, longtime residents — to travel outside the neighborhood just to buy everyday essentials at a reasonable price. That's not a minor inconvenience. It's a barrier to something as basic as putting food on the table without financial strain.

--> This is where ALDI changes the equation.

Why ALDI? Why Here? Why Now?
The space is ready. The former Whole Foods location is already zoned and purpose-built for grocery retail. There is no need for new construction, lengthy permitting, or guesswork about whether the neighborhood can support a store. It has — successfully — for nearly 20 years. ALDI's smaller-footprint model fits the existing space naturally, offering a streamlined path to opening in a community that is actively looking for what comes next.

The demand is real. This petition isn't aspirational — it's backed by data. Alongside signatures, we are collecting direct input from residents on how often they would shop at ALDI and why. The early responses are unambiguous: residents want weekly access to affordable, high-quality groceries within walking distance of their homes.

The need is urgent. Access to affordable, nutritious food isn't just a matter of convenience — it shapes the health and financial resilience of an entire community. Neighborhoods with reliable access to lower-cost grocery options see reduced household financial pressure, better nutrition outcomes, and stronger local economic stability. Lakeview deserves that foundation.

A Natural Fit for Lakeview's Values
ALDI's commitment to sustainability aligns with how this community already thinks and shops. Lakeview residents are highly engaged and increasingly intentional about supporting businesses that prioritize reduced packaging, efficient supply chains, and waste minimization — areas where ALDI has consistently led the industry. This isn't just a store that would serve the neighborhood. It's one that would reflect it.

What We're Asking
We are calling on ALDI's real estate and development team to evaluate the former Whole Foods location at 3640 N. Halsted St as a strong candidate for a new store.

This site offers a rare combination: a proven grocery location in a high-traffic, high-density urban neighborhood with a community that is organized, vocal, and ready to show up — not just to sign a petition, but to shop.

This is not just a request. It is a clear signal of demand.

Add Your Voice
If you live, work, or spend time in Lakeview and would benefit from an affordable, high-quality grocery option in this location, sign and share this petition.

Every signature strengthens the case. Every share extends the reach. Your voice is the proof that this community is ready — and that ALDI belongs here.

Together, let's make sure this space serves Lakeview again — this time with a focus on accessibility, affordability, and everyday value for everyone.
