The Issue

Every day, as a Patient Advocate working with the seniors of Anna, Texas, I witness firsthand the struggles they face simply trying to access essential health care. Anna, a rapidly growing community with over 16,000 residents, still lacks a public transit system, which leaves seniors and others without personal vehicles stranded. This lack of transportation limits access not only to medical services but also to groceries, social activities, and places of employment.

In the United States, transportation access is a critical public health concern. According to a report from the American Public Health Association, inadequate transportation is a barrier to accessing necessary medical care for 3.6 million Americans. The absence of public transit disproportionately affects seniors and low-income individuals, making it difficult for them to live independently and with dignity.

As one of the largest cities in Collin County with a growing senior population, Anna needs to lead by example in facilitating community-based solutions by establishing a reliable and cost-effective public transit system. This initiative will not only increase access to crucial medical appointments but also provide greater independence and quality of life for those residing here.

A feasible solution can be found by investing in a collaborative project involving local government, public health organizations, and transportation entities. Programs like the "Smart Ride" initiative in Ohio, which partners with local governments and non-profits to offer on-demand transit options for seniors, have shown a remarkable increase in health care access among these populations. By implementing a similar model, Anna can ensure its residents are no longer isolated due to lack of transport.

Anna's future must be built on a foundation of accessibility and inclusivity. Providing affordable senior and public transit is not just a matter of convenience — it’s a matter of dignity and necessity. The residents of Anna deserve a city where everyone can thrive, irrespective of their mobility challenges.

I urge the city council of Anna, policy makers, and community leaders to take immediate action in prioritizing the development of a public transit system that caters to the needs of seniors and all residents. If you believe in making Anna a place where no one is hindered by lack of transportation, please sign this petition to support the creation of affordable public transit in our community.
