Bring a Modern First-Run Movie Theater back to Anderson, Indiana

Bring a Modern First-Run Movie Theater back to Anderson, Indiana
The Issue
In October 2019, the closure of Mounds Mall in Anderson, Indiana marked more than the loss of a shopping center — it also resulted in the loss of our community’s last full-time movie theater. Since then, residents of Anderson and Madison County have been left without a consistent, local option to see new movie releases, forcing many to travel 30 minutes or more just to enjoy a basic and widely accessible form of entertainment.
While downtown Anderson is fortunate to have the Paramount Theatre, which occasionally hosts movie screenings, those showings are limited, event-based, and not designed to serve as a full-time cinema. Likewise, the Alexandria Movie Theatre in nearby Alexandria provides an option for some residents, but it is not located within Anderson and still requires travel outside the city. These venues, while valuable in their own ways, do not replace the role of a modern, first-run movie theater that operates daily and serves the broader population.
This gap highlights a larger concern: there is very little for our youth and young adults to do locally. A movie theater is one of the few entertainment options that is safe, affordable, and inclusive for all ages. Movies can be enjoyed by children, teenagers, families, couples, and seniors alike — making a cinema a rare amenity that brings generations together rather than dividing them.
Historically, Anderson always had a local cinema. It served as a community gathering space and provided young people with a positive outlet close to home. Since its closure, that shared experience has disappeared, leaving a noticeable void in the city’s social and cultural landscape.
The absence of a full-time movie theater also impacts the local economy. Cinemas generate steady foot traffic that benefits nearby restaurants, cafés, and retail businesses, while also creating jobs and keeping entertainment spending within the community. Reintroducing a theater would support local commerce and contribute to broader revitalization efforts.
This petition calls for serious exploration of feasible solutions to bring a modern, first-run movie theater back to Anderson. Whether through attracting a national theater chain, supporting a regional operator, or encouraging an independent or community-driven cinema, the goal is clear: restore a missing amenity that our city and surrounding areas currently lack.
If this petition demonstrates substantial community support, the results will be formally compiled and shared with the corporate development offices of Regal Cinemas and AMC Theatres as evidence of market demand in Anderson and the surrounding areas.
By signing this petition, you stand with residents who believe Anderson deserves access to everyday entertainment options that many other communities take for granted. You support opportunities for youth, shared experiences for families, and reinvestment in our city’s quality of life.
Let’s bring moviegoing back to Anderson, Indiana — for our community, our economy, and our future.
