Costco is planning a new warehouse in Southfield, Michigan — and we see an incredible opportunity: a kosher Costco bakery.

The greater Southfield area — including Oak Park, Huntington Woods, and West Bloomfield — is home to Michigan’s largest Jewish population. In total, the Metro Detroit tri-county region has over 70,000 Jewish residents living in 31,000+ households. Southfield alone has about 6,700 Jewish residents, with another 11,000+ in neighboring communities. 

Currently, no Costco in Michigan offers kosher bakery items. Yet, Costco has successfully implemented kosher-certified bakeries in other states, including New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Florida. These precedents show that Costco can make kosher bakery products accessible to communities that want and need them.

A kosher bakery at the Southfield location would:

• Make Costco’s bakery offerings inclusive and accessible to kosher-observant families
• Attract new customers seeking kosher options 
• Serve a loyal and growing customer base
• Strengthen Costco’s reputation as a retailer that listens to and meets community needs

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge Costco to bring a kosher-certified bakery to the proposed Southfield warehouse.
