Bring a Community Bike Park to Larkspur Corte Madera
Larkspur and Corte Madera are home to an incredible community of young riders, active families, and lifelong cyclists yet there are still very few dedicated places where kids can safely ride, build confidence, and develop skills close to home.
Our community sits at the center of one of the most iconic cycling cultures in the world. Every day, local kids ride bikes to school, families ride the bike path together, and our middle school and high school cycling programs continue to grow. In fact, the Redwood High School mountain bike team is one of the best in the country. But despite this deep connection to cycling, local youth still lack access to a purpose-built facility designed specifically for bikes.
We believe it’s time to change that.
We are advocating for a welcoming, community-focused bike park featuring:
- A modern pump track
- Beginner-friendly jump lines
- Progressive riding areas for older and more advanced riders
- Safe skill-building zones for all ages and abilities
- A space designed for learning, recreation, and healthy outdoor fun
- This would not be an extreme sports facility. It would be a thoughtfully designed community recreation space where kids, teens, parents, and riders of all experience levels can safely ride together.
A Safe Place for Kids to Ride
Right now, many young riders practice skills in parking lots, neighborhood streets, informal dirt areas, or spaces not designed for bikes.
A dedicated bike park creates a safer alternative by providing:
Predictable riding flow, clear visibility, progressive features designed for learning, separation between beginner and advanced users, and a controlled environment built specifically for bicycles.
Features like rollers, berms, and pump tracks help kids safely develop balance, braking, cornering, and bike-handling skills in a way that feels approachable and fun.
Designed for All Ages and Skill Levels.Modern bike parks are designed to serve the entire community at once. Young children on balance bikes and scooters, elementary school riders, middle and high school students progressing jumps, parents riding alongside their kids, and experienced cyclists can all safely share the space together.
The goal is simple:
Create a healthy, outdoor community space that encourages confidence, independence, movement, and connection supporting Youth and Teen Recreation.
Larkspur and Corte Madera offer many organized sports opportunities, but there are fewer accessible drop-in spaces where kids can simply show up, ride bikes, and spend time outdoors with friends.
A bike park gives young people:
- A positive place to gather
- Healthy independent recreation
- Physical activity outside organized sports
- Opportunities to build confidence and resilience
- Stronger social connection through outdoor activity
- Especially for middle school and high school students, these kinds of community spaces matter.
Protecting Open Space and Reducing Conflicts
Without a sanctioned place to ride, cyclists often end up using skateparks, informal dirt jumps, trails, or other public spaces not designed for bike progression riding.
This can create:
Safety conflicts, trail damage, erosion, and frustration between different user groups.
A dedicated bike park helps concentrate this activity in a managed, purpose-built location while helping protect surrounding open space and public areas.
Building Community Through Bikes
Cycling has always been part of the culture of Marin.
A bike park would strengthen that tradition by creating a central gathering place where families, kids, coaches, riders, and neighbors can connect.
These spaces naturally become community hubs: Beginners learn from older riders, Families spend time outdoors together, Friendships are built through shared activity, Kids gain confidence through progression and persistence.
This is about far more than bikes.
It’s about creating a healthy, positive, community-centered place for the next generation.
