Why this petition matters

Started by Maxwell Miller

I am a student in the College of San Mateo Middle College Program. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, We are required to check in at the end of Advisory. This is a waste of time and energy that could be used for something more productive.

Advisory is supposed to be a time when students can get help with homework, visit Professor's office hours, and engage in clubs. However, this Advisory period which is supposed to foster maturity and independence, and scheduling abilities are cut short and wasted on checking in instead of these very important skills that will be transferred into the rest of their lives.

Middle College is a program that aims for students to be prepared for independent lives; although, signing into advisory by the end of the period portrays the lack of trust the MC advisors have. Middle College is also a place to abolish the traditional norms and expectations of a contemporary high school in order for the students to become more self-sufficient and responsible; therefore, it is imperative to build student-teacher trust, in order for the vision to be executed.

I have talked with many teachers who agree that checking in is unnecessary time spent but they say they have no control over it because it’s “policy” so I am making this petition to try and change this policy so we can use our advisory periods more effectively!

Please sign if you agree to stop checking in at the end of Advisory Period!
