Stop communal bins plans and save our refuse collection on Burstead Close

The Issue

On Wednesday 19th February 22, Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC) posted a letter to every household on Burstead Close. BHCC stated that City Clean had approached Housing Services saying that they wanted to remove all wheelie bins, from those houses that have them and decommission bin stores in flats.

City Clean say it is a fire and safety issues for the bin stores in flats but would also want remove all wheelie bins from Burstead Close, even though no issue has been identified.

Three years ago they removed our recycling wheelie bins, despite numerous complaints from residents. Several residents have emailed the council ever since asking for these bins to be re-instated with no response despite repeatedly contacting the City Clean Team.

This is incredibly disappointing and frustrating, particularly as there are a number of houses on this close, and moving to a communal refuse collection model, will cause difficulty for most people who aren't living in flats. To add insult to injury, the letter states there are low rates of recycling on the Close. This is patently untrue as all of the communal recycling bins are often full at the end of the week following collection each Monday, and most residents wish to recycle household waste where possible -  in line with current Council and national objectives.

So, not only are we paying Council Tax which doesn't include an individual recycling service (something afforded to most other residents in Hollingdean) but now we are being asked to give up our rubbish collection too. It has also been indicated that those that own their houses would incur a cost for these new areas to be built, plus we would be losing valuable parking spaces. The treatment of residents on this Close by the Council is disgraceful, we are frequently disregarded in favour of neighbouring streets and this new proposal is the latest example of this.

The communal recycling areas are often overflowing, with frequent incidences of fly-tipping. A move towards a total communal service model for the Close will only increase this problem.
