Repurpose Stone Mountain

The Issue

This petition seeks to continue solving the racism problem in the United States of America by changing the theme of a Georgia State Park in Stone Mountain. The current theme is the Confederate States of America. The face of Stone Mountain and the center of the entire park is home to the largest relief sculpture in the world. This sculpture is of three Confederate leaders.

The carving and park were created to protest integration and racial equality. Repurposing the carving and the theme of the park to freedom would be a protest against racism. Instead of being a symbol of racism, Stone Mountain Park could be a symbol of the progress the United States of America has made since the civil war and it can inspire citizens to continue promoting freedom.

Stone Mountain Freedom Park can keep some of the great things about the current park, like the laser show and the biking trails, but change the focus of the park to freedom. The citizens of Georgia should decide what will be done to the carving to reflect the new theme. The past can be learned from, but honoring those who fought for slavery will not create a better future.

Citizens of the United States of America need to celebrate their freedom-loving history, but we do not need to honor and celebrate those who chose to divide our nation and fight for continued slavery.
