The Issue
We are calling on the Town of Breckenridge to prioritize the health of residents, visitors, children, pets, and wildlife over outdated and hazardous pesticide practices.
Did You Know?
The Town of Breckenridge routinely sprays playgrounds, parks, sports fields, and other public spaces with carcinogenic pesticides. This puts children, pets, and wildlife at risk every single day. Breckenridge is better than this, and for that reason, Resident Sarah Creech, Nontoxic Neighborhoods and other community members, have taken a stand, bringing this urgent public health issue to the city council agenda.
“Pregnant women, infants, and young children are especially vulnerable to synthetic pesticides. Even extremely low-dose exposures during early development can cause lasting damage. By protecting them, we preserve the health of all.” — Philip J. Landrigan, MD, MSc, FAAP, Non-Toxic Neighborhoods' Advisor
The Facts:
Per the EPA's - glyphosate threatens 93% of endangered species and destroys 96% of their critical habitat.
Children and residents are unknowingly exposed to toxic pesticides in public spaces—without consent or disclosure.
Local HOAs are using chemicals like 2,4-D and dicamba, both linked to serious health risks.
Taxpayer dollars are being spent to spray known carcinogens for cosmetic weed control, despite safer and more effective alternatives.
Health Impacts of Pesticide Exposure:
Cancer: Many pesticides, including glyphosate, are linked to increased cancer risk, including lymphoma and leukemia.
Endocrine Disruption: Pesticides interfere with hormones, affecting fertility, development, and causing reproductive issues.
Neurological Damage: Pesticides harm the nervous system, leading to cognitive deficits, memory loss, and developmental disorders like ADHD.
Immune System Suppression: Chronic exposure weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and autoimmune diseases.
Developmental Impact on Children: Children are more vulnerable to pesticides, with risks of lower IQ, birth defects, and developmental delays.
Wildlife Harm: Pesticides cause reproductive issues and genetic mutations in wildlife, including pollinators like bees.
A Better Way Forward:
Breckenridge must adopt proven, cost-effective organic and regenerative land care practices that eliminate toxic exposures, protect health, and preserve our natural resources. Dozens of communities across the country have already made this shift—demonstrating that beautiful public spaces do not require harmful chemicals.
“If Breckenridge is serious about protecting its people and environment, it must leave behind chemical dependency and lead with safer, sustainable solutions. We know better. Now it’s time to do better.”
Take Action:
Sign the petition to demand that Breckenridge stop using public funds to poison our parks, schools, and shared spaces. These chemicals may be invisible, but their effects are not. Our health, our kids, and our environment depend on urgent change.
Take Action Now
Sign this petition to demand that Breckenridge immediately stop using public funds to poison our parks, schools, and gathering spaces. Pesticides may be invisible after application, but their harmful effects last for generations. It’s time to put health and safety first and end unnecessary, dangerous chemical exposure in our community.
Breckenridge and Summit County deserves better. Let’s ensure our city leads with health, safety, and sustainability for generations to come.
