The Issue

Pasig City is widely recognized for its strong environmental programs, progressive development, and transparent leadership under the city mayor. The local government has promoted cleanliness, sustainability, and accountability in serving the community. However, despite these positive efforts, the increasing problem of black smoke emissions from aging jeepneys, industrial facilities, and chemical pollution affecting the Pasig River continues to present serious environmental and public health concerns.

Black smoke emissions from aging jeepneys and industrial plants pose a critical concern for the environment and health of people living in Pasig City. Many people in this city, such as students, daily commuters, and vulnerable segments of society, are exposed to harmful chemicals and toxins that may lead to respiratory diseases and other health-related difficulties.

Moreover, improper waste disposal of chemicals, as well as industrial byproducts, remains a source of concern for the Pasig River, resulting in injury to aquatic life, unpleasant odor, and hindrance to rehabilitation efforts for one of the city's most vital natural resources. The worsening quality of both air and water is a danger to both sustainability and the health of Pasigueños.

The petition seeks to call on, and respectfully appeal to

  • Pasig City Government
  • Land Transportation Office (LTO)
  • Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
  • Local traffic enforcers, as well as owners of factories and industrial establishments.

We strongly urge these authorities and stakeholders to implement and strictly enforce anti-smoke belching regulations, particularly for outdated and poorly maintained public utility vehicles; support and promote the modernization of environmentally sustainable public transportation; strengthen monitoring and regulatory measures to prevent the improper disposal of chemical waste into the Pasig River; conduct regular environmental inspections while imposing appropriate penalties on violators; and enhance public awareness initiatives that encourage responsible environmental practices among citizens and business sectors.

Through collective and committed action, Pasig City can safeguard public health, restore and preserve the Pasig River, and ensure a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment for present and future generations. We respectfully encourage all residents and concerned citizens to support and sign this petition to help protect our community and environment.
