Breaking the Stigma: Prioritizing Mental Health for every Filipino
The Issue

Mental health is a sad reality we all face, but still it remains one of the least talked about and most misunderstood issues in our society. The truth is, struggling mentally doesn’t make anyone weak; it makes them human.
According to the World Health Organization, over 280 million people worldwide suffer from depression, making it one of the leading causes of disability. Here in the Philippines alone, there's a report that says there's a 25% increase in mental health-related cases during the pandemic. The number of struggling kababayans (Filipinos) is still rising, yet the help they need remains out of reach due to 0.5 psychiatrists per 100,000 people; many have nowhere to turn. .
But beyond the lack of access to mental health care, stigma remains one of the biggest reasons people don’t seek help. Too often, people are afraid of being labeled as weak, dramatic, or “just oa /over acting.” But mental health struggles are not something you can just shake off. In 2020, PSA recorder over 4,400 suicide cases which is a heartbreaking reality that we cannot afford to ignore. The Republic Act No. 11036 or commonly known as the Mental Health Act was supposed to integrate mental health into public health services, many Filipinos still find it difficult to access affordable and quality mental health support.
It's not just about numbers, it’s about real people, real families, and real lives affected every single day. That’s why we need real action. The government must strengthen awareness programs, increase funding for mental health services, improve school-based mental health initiatives, and fully enforce the Mental Health Act. But beyond policies, we as a society need to start listening, understanding, and making sure people feel safe when they reach out for help.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. No one should feel alone in their struggles. Let's help each other and break the stigma. Let's talk about mental health openly and make sure that help is available for everyone who needs it.
