Breaking Barriers, Building Futures

The Issue

Many families, like mine, have seen their dreams of education and a brighter future crumble under the weight of exorbitant college costs. It is incredibly stressful to worry about college affordability, and many of us find ourselves discouraged by the seemingly unattainable financial challenge it presents. Education, a fundamental key to success, should not be a distant dream due to financial constraints.

Currently, college tuition, books, housing, and other fees are at an all-time high. According to the College Board, the average published tuition and fees for full-time undergraduate students are roughly $10,560 for public colleges (in-state students) and $37,650 for private colleges for the 2023-2024 academic year. Factor in accommodation, textbooks, and other expenses, and the cost rises significantly. Consequently, many students either delay their college plans or abandon them altogether.

While financial aid is available, it often falls short of covering the full cost. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that only 59% of college students graduate within six years, and financial challenges are a significant barrier. Many students come from families who simply cannot afford to bridge the gap between aid and actual expenses.

The U.S. Department of Education and higher education institutions must take urgent action to alleviate the burden of these costs. Solutions could include freezing tuition fees, increasing need-based aid, expanding work-study opportunities, or offering more part-time and online learning options that reduce living expenses. Additionally, re-evaluating eligibility criteria for financial aid to be more inclusive could ensure more students receive the help they need.

By making college education more affordable, we not only fulfill the dreams of countless young individuals and their families but also unlock the potential of a more educated and skilled workforce, which benefits society as a whole.

Join me in calling upon educational institutions and our government to take necessary actions. Please sign this petition to make college education affordable for everyone who dreams of achieving it.
