Break the Chain, End the Pain

Break the Chain, End the Pain
The Issue
Teenage pregnancy has become a pressing issue in the Philippines, particularly in regions such as SOCCSKSARGEN, where the adolescent birth rates have been relevantly increasing. Based on the report from Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), statistics from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) indicated an increase in teenage pregnancies in the region by 84% during the year 2023. The growing concern has not only implications for the well-being of young mothers but also for society as a whole concerning early pregnancy.
Early Teenage Pregnancy is not just a personal issue but it is a public concern that has implications for health, education, and economic stability. These young adolescent mothers are more likely to have complications at birth, to drop out of school, and to experience economic instability. Moreover, this situation does not only affect young mothers but also young fathers, who share the responsibility of their actions in the life they bring to the world. However, as their responsibility gets heavier, most of these young fathers escape and leave the family they have formed from the start, becoming one of the factors that contribute to the growing absence of fathers, especially at an early age. Furthermore, beyond youth parenthood, early sexual activity carries risks of sexually transmitted disease (STD) infection where many have no cure. Unless this problem is handled properly, there will be little hope for a healthier, more secure future for the youth.
As the rate of teen pregnancy keeps increasing, which exposes increasingly more young lives to health implications, disrupted learning, and financial struggles, it is time to intervene. The later we do so, the younger generation will get exposed to such challenges that could have been prevented through proper education, awareness, and support systems. With the growing availability of information and resources, we can empower the adolescents to make informed choices about their future. We need to act right away to stop the cycle and bring a healthier and more secure future for the youth and the future generation.
