The Issue

The Brant County Planning Advisory Committee is considering a permit application that, if approved, would allow Willow Pond Farm—a fur farm in Scotland, Ontario, that currently houses 1,200 minks—to expand to confine as many as 4,000 animals.

Each breeding female has about 5 kits per year that are killed in the fall. So, that means they are going from a 6,000 mink killed per year, to 20,000.

In the wild, minks are solitary animals who enjoy swimming and burrowing and climbing trees. They move by a bounding gate at speeds of up to 6.5 km/h and can occupy a territory of up to 2,500 acres of wetlands.  In the warm weather minks can swim for up to 3 hours without stopping and diving depths of up to 3 m have been recorded.

In the shameless and exploitative fur industry, they are crammed into tiny wire cages, unable to take more than a few steps in any direction or feel the earth beneath their feet.  This can cause a great deal of stress for the minks and can lead many to go insane under these conditions,  evidence has been seen of some even mutilating themselves and cannibalizing their cage mates.

Fur farming also produces an enormous amount of animal waste causing havoc on our natural environment.   Not only does this process consume a massive amount of energy, but also uses toxic chemicals such as tar, chromium and formaldehyde required to prevent the fur from biodegrading. This process is certainly not a "green" one and in a fur farms entire life cycle it produces more greenhouse gases, causes more water and soil pollution, more ozone depletion and more toxic emissions then any other textile production process out there!

These fur farms are only able to stay a float with government subsidies as people around the world open their eyes to this inherently cruel practice.

Countries such as Austria, Croatia and United Kingdom have all banned this cruel practice and I believe with increasing awareness in Canada its only a matter of time before we too can come back to our compassionate roots and do the same!

Please I call on you to reject this proposal and ban any and all future expansions of the Willow Pond Mink Farm.
