The Issue

Brannon road residents,

Many of us who live along Brannon road have increasing concerns about the traffic volume and lack of adherence to posted speed limits. These issues have significantly worsened over the past few years due to the growth in population in our region of Forsyth County. Many drivers use Brannon road as a shortcut from Old Atlanta road to Ronald Reagan Blvd for easier access to GA-400, particularly during morning and evening rush hour. This increased volume makes it extremely difficult for residents along Brannon road to leave their homes, neighborhoods, and religious facilities. At certain times of day, residents are unable to turn left from Brannon road onto Old Atlanta road due to the high number of non-residents using the left turn lane from Old Atlanta to Brannon. Drivers often ignore the speed limit along Brannon further increasing safety concerns.

Pedestrian traffic along Brannon has increased with the recent addition of sidewalks and the new construction of the Beth Israel synagogue. Many families that live in the Woodland Park and Brannon Oaks neighborhoods walk to synagogue, especially on the Sabbath. There have been several near-misses between speeding vehicles and pedestrians recently. In particular, the intersection of Woodland Trace and Brannon has poor visualization by oncoming traffic due to being located at the crest of the hill. Most of Brannon is poorly lit leading to increased risk in the evenings and at night.

We are requesting the county survey the area and consider measures to enhance traffic flow, improve safety and mitigate potential risks. Below are the proposed solutions we would like considered.

1) Installation of a roundabout at Brannon / Old Atlanta intersection.

  • This would enable residents of Brannon road to have the ability to turn left on Old Atlanta during times of peak traffic.
  • It would also improve flow of traffic turning right on to Old Atlanta, preventing traffic build up that can block the entrance to Woodland Park at times of peak traffic.
  • Would encourage non-residents to to redirect the additional 300 yards to the intersection of Old Atlanta and Ronald Reagan which has a traffic light and a 4-lane road better equipped to handle higher volume traffic.

2) Installation of two 3-way stop signs with crosswalks at the intersections of Brannon / Woodland Trace and Brannon / Brannon Oaks Lane

  • This would facilitate residents being able to enter and exit the neighborhoods more freely
  • It would also slow traffic along Brannon road discouraging speeders and those using the road as a shortcut
  • Crosswalks would improve pedestrian safety and access to sidewalks located on the opposite side of Brannon road

Once we have received an adequate number of signatures, we plan to present the above input and suggestions to our zoned county commissioner and the planning commissioner. You may also reach out to them individually using the information provided below. Thank you in advance for your assistance in making improvements to Brannon road!

To the residents of Woodland Park who have either reached out individually or signed the change.org petition, thanks for sharing your concerns, comments, and suggestions. Although, it wasn't something that was reported or distributed to the community in a public manner, I had previously requested staff to study the Old Atlanta corridor for potential safety and traffic improvements, and the County is actively seeking to make improvements in your area. Due to the number of inquiries, I will attempt to answer as many questions as I can. The project is identified in the Comprehensive Transportation Plan, funded in the current SPLOST IX. RC_135 addresses Old Atlanta Road Safety Improvements from Melody Mizer Lane to Ronald Reagan Boulevard. The consultant working on the SPLOST IX projects is currently scoping the work. Traffic counts will be taken at five intersections along Old Atlanta Road: Ronald Reagan Boulevard, Brannon Road, Daves Creek Drive, Gilbert Road, and Melody Mizer Lane. Once the traffic counts are received the consultant will be reviewing it, along with accident history, and will recommend improvements to the roadway, intersections, and sidewalk connectivity along the corridor. As for time frame, this study will commence after the first of the year. Our Capital Projects division recently held a SPLOST IX Management Coordination Meeting and I am awaiting more details. I do want to address a couple of specific questions/requests that have been made. It has been suggested that the road be closed to through traffic or the intersection be closed altogether. Unfortunately, neither of those options are available, as it is a publicly funded roadway. It is already designated (with accompanying signage) for no through trucks. An issue that has come up a few times over the last couple years is the installation of a sidewalk and/or a cross walk from the subdivision entrance to the sidewalk across Brannon. There are a few engineering considerations that at the current time prevent those from being viable. The first issue is that there is nothing to tie into. If the developer of Woodland Park had built a sidewalk system and stubbed it out to Brannon, we could connect there. Another issue is the sight lines do not provide a safe environment for crossing. Also, it is not curretly a 3-way stop. Per transportation standards, the proper solution under current conditions would be to construct a parallel sidewalk with a crossing at the intersection with Old Atlanta Road. That still does not resolve the connectivity issue, and if accommodation was made for WP, the county would need to build it along the entire length so as not to be providing a "gratuity" for a single community. I will be interested to see what actions the consultants recommend to address these andvother concerns in this increasingly congested section of Old Atlanta and its side streets. Please let me know if I can assist you further with this or other matters, particularly if your question wasn't fully addressed. Thank you for raising the Brannon Road traffic concerns. As an appointed member of the Forsyth County Planning Commission, my role is limited to zoning and land-use recommendations. I do not oversee roadway operations, transportation policy, or capital projects. I have forwarded the petitioners’ correspondence to Commissioner Laura Semanson, who along with the County Engineer and the Board of Commissioners is the appropriate authority on these matters. I will remain attentive to any land-use cases in the Brannon Road area and will consider transportation input as part of those reviews. Sincerely, Stacy Guy Forsyth County Planning Commission - District 5
