BRAMLEY RESIDENTS PETITION, For a Pedestrian Crossing On Cross Street, Bramley S66.
The Issue
Living on Bramley Cross Street, we face an everyday life-threatening situation, trying to navigate what is a highly trafficked intersection with palm-sweating unpredictability. With a busy public house restaurant, Aldi store, and not one but two exit side roads off the main dual carriageway, the area sees an overwhelming amount of foot traffic. The present condition of Bramley Cross is not just an inconvenience; it poses a dangerous threat to everyone, placing countless lives at risk, including elders, children, and visitors uninitiated to the exact traffic pattern.
Meetings were held with RMBC, where a provisional plan was set down to address this issue, but it was later postponed due to lack of funds, moving the planned start date to a disappointing 2027. This signals a concerning lack of priority for pedestrian safety, a delay we cannot afford.
The benefits of controlled pedestrian crossings are universally acknowledged; they not only ensure safety but also provide better traffic management. Furthermore, a 2015 survey by the Transport Research Laboratory discovered that zebra crossings on roads with high traffic flows could reduce pedestrian accidents by up to 61% (Transport Research Laboratory, 2015). Now, these statistics render it inconceivable to accept the incremental safety risk that Bramley Cross residents are forced to deal with on a daily basis.
We believe in the value of each life and question the priorities that have led to this delay. We appeal to RMBC and all relevant authorities to reassess funding and expedite the controlled pedestrian crossing on Bramley Cross Street. Please sign this petition requesting immediate attention to ensure the safety of our community.
