Remove Dr. Jay Hudson as Morgan County Animal Control Administrator

The Issue

On March 24, 2014, Dr. Jay Hudson, Morgan County Animal Control Administrator, gave a presentation to the Jacksonville, Illinois City Council requesting they consider imposing breed specific restrictions and regulation on breeds of dogs commonly referred to as "pit bulls" because, he says, they are more dangerous and vicious.

His stance on these dog breeds opposes studies supported by many professional animal organizations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association. The AVMA has found that no breed of dog is inherently more dangerous simply because of its breed [1]. Dr. Hudson took an oath to "use [his] scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare" [2]. It would fall to animal control to enforce his recommended regulations. Morgan County Animal Control is a kill shelter that is already overwhelmed and burdened by pet overpopulation due to the lack of spay/neuter culture and irresponsible pet ownership. His proposal will not be ensuring the welfare of these dogs.

We need an animal control administrator who understands not only the need to keep our community safe, but also the need to promote animal welfare and education in our county. Dr. Hudson has shown that he is not interested in promoting responsible pet ownership but would rather displace blame from the dog owner to the dog.

By signing this petition, the undersigned request the removal of Dr. Hudson from the position of Morgan County Animal Control Administrator.
