The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens of Boyle County, respectfully submit this petition in opposition to the proposed construction of a solar farm by Galehead Development, LLC, a company based in Boston, Massachusetts. The proposed site for this project spans across the northern border of Boyle County, from Gwinn Island Road to Highway 127.

While we recognize the importance of renewable energy and the global need to transition toward sustainable energy sources, we have several concerns regarding the potential impact of this solar farm on our community, environment, and way of life. Our objections are as follows:

1. Environmental Impact:
The construction of the solar farm could have significant environmental consequences for the area, which includes local wildlife habitats and natural resources. The disruption of these habitats could have long-lasting effects on local ecosystems. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the impact of large-scale solar projects on soil erosion, water runoff, and water quality in nearby streams.

2. Aesthetic and Quality of Life Concerns:
The proposed solar farm would alter the rural character and scenic beauty of the area. The natural landscape is an important feature of the region, both for residents and visitors. The installation of large-scale solar panels would significantly detract from the aesthetic value of the land, which many residents hold dear and depend upon for tourism and recreation.

3. Impact on Property Values:
Studies have shown that the presence of industrial-scale solar farms can decrease property values in surrounding areas. The proximity of this solar farm to homes and local businesses could negatively impact property values and the economic vitality of the surrounding community. This may discourage future development or investment in the region, potentially harming local homeowners and small businesses.

4. Lack of Local Representation and Input:
Galehead Development, LLC is based in Boston, and while we understand the company’s interest in expanding its business, it is troubling that a company with no local ties is making decisions about the land and livelihoods of Boyle County residents. There has been limited transparency and insufficient opportunities for meaningful public input from residents regarding the potential impacts of this project.

5. Land Use and Zoning:
The proposed development would involve a significant change in land use, from agricultural or residential zoning to industrial-scale infrastructure. We are concerned about the long-term effects of this shift in land use, especially as it relates to the community’s agricultural heritage and the preservation of farmland.

6. Economic Considerations:
While the proponents of this solar farm claim economic benefits, such as job creation during construction and tax revenue, we believe that these benefits are short-term and do not outweigh the long-term negative effects on the community. Moreover, we question the sustainability of such promises, especially given the lack of transparency about the specifics of the development agreement.

In light of these concerns, we respectfully request that Boyle County officials thoroughly review this proposed solar farm project and consider alternative sites that would not have such a profound impact on our community, environment, and way of life. We ask for a halt to the permitting process and for additional public hearings where local residents can voice their opinions and discuss the potential impacts in more detail.

We urge you to listen to the voices of the people of Boyle County and protect the future of our land and community.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
