As a Jewish citizen, I stand against the unsettling wave of antisemitism in America. The owner of Mauro Cafe at Fred Segal on Melrose, Evelyn Joan, has reached a new deplorable level of this egregious behavior with her blatant discrimination against Jewish patrons. This discrimination has not only been verbal; Evelyn Joan also actively took part in a brutal assault on Jews at the Adas Torah Synagogue in Los Angeles, endorsing and bringing physical violence into a place of prayer and peace.

Further, her suggestion that Jewish individuals should rather visit Beverly Hills, a highly Jewish populated area, amounts to racial segregation, a sinister practice that we have fought hard to eliminate from our society. With this behavior, Evelyn Joan is directly infringing upon the constitutional rights of Jewish American citizens, a clear violation of The Unruh Civil Rights Act.

According to statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI Director Christopher Wray has warned in a senate panel in October 2023,  saying 60% of all religious-based hate crimes targeted Jewish people. That means more than half of the hate crimes happening within the United States are against Jewish individuals. We refuse to merely be victims. Instead, we choose to rise against this victimhood, demanding justice and that our rights to personal security and freedom from discrimination be upheld.

I am calling upon all those who stand against discrimination, antisemitism, and hate crimes - a call to Fred Segal and the City of West Hollywood to take legal action against Evelyn Joan's behavior.
