Boycott "Guilford Village West"

The Issue

🛑 Stop the Destruction of Guilford’s Identity

In recent years, Guilford has experienced a wave of commercial development that is fundamentally at odds with the town’s historical, architectural, and ecological identity. Woodlands are being clear-cut to make way for yet more generic strip malls and insipid commercial structures that ignore the aesthetic character our community has cultivated for generations. A prime example is the so-called “Rock Pile” development — a poorly conceived and largely unused collection of retail spaces that remains an unwelcome visual blight along Boston Post Road. Now, a new project, "Guilford Village West" is being approved that would continue this troubling trend. These developments offer no clear benefit to residents, yet come at a steep and permanent cost to Guilford’s landscape, heritage, and community integrity.

Why You Should Care — and Why You Should Sign:

  • This kind of growth serves developers, not residents. Guilford doesn’t need more banks, chain stores, or parking lots. It needs preservation, not pointless expansion.
  • Our forests are disappearing. These developments begin with clear-cutting, removing mature trees, wildlife habitats, and native ecosystems that have existed for generations.
  • The town’s character is being replaced with generic architecture. Instead of thoughtful, historically inspired construction, we’re getting flat-roofed, cookie-cutter buildings that could belong in any city or strip mall across America.
  • These buildings often sit underused or empty. The “Rock Pile” development is a prime example — ill-conceived, rarely-utilized, and completely out of place.
  • Increased development means increased traffic. More commercial buildings bring more cars, congestion, noise, and pollution.
  • Unchecked development spreads. Today, it's 1940 Boston Post Road. Tomorrow, they are razing the Guilford Green and demolishing the Hyland House.
  • Other towns say no — so can we. Plenty of communities successfully enforce architectural and environmental standards that protect their unique character. Guilford has the authority to do the same.

Sign this petition to demand a halt to this kind of development in Guilford. Let’s preserve our history, protect our forests, and fight for a town that values identity over convenience and legacy over profit.
