Boycott Colston Hall for 'Countering Colston' name change

This petition had 22 supporters

Bristol's Colston Hall is an excellent venue, attracting a range of talent. However, they have caved in to pressure from far-left campaigners and agreed to support a name change, essentially airbrushing an important part of Bristol's history. I and others oppose this appeasatory move; the decisions of our ancestors must be available for all to see, lest they be forgotten and repeated once more.

Katie Finnegan-Clarke, who led the Countering Colston - Campaign to Decolonise Bristol movement, said: “We really are delighted. We will now continue to target all of the buildings named in honour of Edward Colston. We want his statue taken down and put in a museum. The schools must also be renamed.“

The Slave Trade was a moral atrocity, but it was acceptable for its time. Ignoring history in this way i) will not erase what happened, and will promote ignorance about mistakes of the past, and ii) pave the way for further cultural whitewashes in future, once our idea of what is morally acceptable shifts again. Should we demolish Bath because it was built by the Romans, or destroy Kew Gardens for its link to the Opium trade?

Oppose cultural Marxism and boycott Colston Hall, unless it agrees to retain its original name.

We oppose your appeasatory decision to change the venue's name, and will boycott you until you reverse this decision.

I hope that you will continue to attract a range of excellent talent, and not cave in to vocal far-left activists (and Massive Attack, whose glory days are far behind them) for the sake of political correctness. Allow Countering Colston this victory, and their next target will be the statues and schools that bear the Colston name.

Erasing history is an Orwellian move; the decisions of our ancestors must be available for all to see, lest they be forgotten and repeated once more.

Yours sincerely,
