According to the Honeybee Conservancy, "One in three bites of food we eat depends entirely on bees – and they have been dying at unprecedented rates. Their hard work is not only essential to healthy ecosystems, but to sustaining animal and human life too." 

We understand that the Beekeeping Merit Badge was discontinued 25 years ago due to a lack of interest in it. We, the undersigned, believe that the current climate which is endangering bees, and "Save the Bees" campaigns have dramatically increased interest in beekeeping in America. There are beekeeping clubs in many communities now, and it should be easier to recruit merit badge counselors for this important skill.

While there is a mechanism for BSA to accept requests for new merit badges, there doesn't appear to be a specific path for resurrecting retired ones, or gauging interest in them. For this reason, we are signing this petition in order to show that there is a renewed interest in offering this merit badge to our youth in the Scouts BSA program.
