Hedgehog populations in the UK are declining, in the last 20 years urban populations have decreased by 30% and rural populations by 50% (The British Hedgehog Preservation Society, 4/8/21). In recent years the number of hedgehogs being brought into rescues because they have been injured by strimmers has increased. A quick check of long grassy areas before strimming could prevent so many unnecessary injuries and deaths. Injuries aren't the only issues caused by strimmers, Hedgehog nests are often disturbed by strimmers which can lead to Hoglets that are still dependent on their mothers being abandoned.  All strimmers should have a warning label on them to remind people to check for hedgehogs before they strim.
