UK Gov: Reverse Decision To Close Legal Routes For Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children

UK Gov: Reverse Decision To Close Legal Routes For Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children
The Issue
On the 26th January 2021, The Independent published this article:
It states that "Unaccompanied child refugees will no longer be given sanctuary in the UK" and goes on to explain:
"The Dubs Amendment, passed in May 2016 by David Cameron’s government in the wake of an increase in refugees arriving in Europe during the Syrian war, required ministers to relocate and support asylum-seeking children from the continent.
But Chris Philp, the immigration minister, said that although the Home Office took the “responsibility for the welfare of children very seriously”, there would no longer be a legal route to Britain for these minors."
Regarding Mr. Chris Philp's statement, we disagree. It is evident that this government DOES NOT take the welfare of children very seriously. From the free school meals fiasco, the closure of 1000 Sure Start children's centres to the matter in question, the government of Boris Johnson has shown its contempt for children's lives both at home and overseas and we can no longer stand by idly whilst this blatant violation of human rights and neglect of duty to the vulnerable continues.
So today we demand of the government:
Reverse the decision to close legal routes for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum, reinstating the Dubs Amendment as a temporary measure, prior to introducing new legislation that will open necessary legal routes for unaccompanied child refugees (under 18s) to seek asylum in the UK - on a more permanent basis.
It is without question a moral obligation as human beings to protect children, especially those in vulnerable positions, from harm. In this case, the UK government has left minors fleeing from conflict and potential death at risk of being trafficked, first and foremost. Otherwise, they may resort to other more dangerous methods of entering the country, which has already led to the death and suffering of many.
To apply a little more context: Britain has, for a long time, played a major role in many of the conflicts that have contributed to this problem. It has been dedicated to fighting terrorist organisations, particularly in the middle east, where a great number of people are fleeing and ultimately (many) attempt to make the dangerous journey to the UK. What's more, many studies have shown that the use of explosive ordinance to tackle terrorism in populated areas is a key driving factor in the displacement of people. Despite the (and former) governments role in this, the decision has been made to no longer offer safe passage to unaccompanied children attempting to seek asylum here.
Our aim is to reverse this and furthermore, push for new legislation that will protect these vulnerable people on a more permanent basis and continuously offer legal and safe passage to the UK. In future years do we really want to look back and say we did nothing?
