Stop the planning and construction of the proposed Nine Elms to Pimlico Bridge and the unnecessary expenditure of £43 million pounds on this project. This money can be put to better use.

The Issue

Explanation:

Wandsworth Council are pushing forward with a bridge between Nine Elms and Pimlico and have hired Colander Associates to operate a design competition www.nepbridgecompetition.co.uk.

The proposed bridge is not yet live. Let’s keep it that way. TFL’s initial feasibility studies estimated time savings, compared with crossing the existing bridges, of around 7 minutes for pedestrians, and 1 minute for cyclists.

The two existent bridges of Chelsea and Vauxhall are about 1 mile apart.

The proposed Nine Elms to Pimlico Bridge would cause:

1.  The catastrophic loss of Pimlico Gardens & Shrubbery, the only riverside garden square in London;

2.  The loss of amenity in St George’s Square gardens, the only significant public green space and play area in Pimlico, to the detriment of residents from the whole of Pimlico;

3.  A threat to the existence of Westminster Boating Charity, a longstanding youth charity in Pimlico;

4.  The loss of and damage to many high value mature trees in both gardens;

5.  An estimated 9000 cyclists and/or 9000 pedestrians crossing over the bridge every day, ruining the tranquil character of St George’s Square and causing disruption to residents across Pimlico;

6.  Vehicle traffic congestion on Grosvenor Road backing up along the embankment to Vauxhall Bridge, Millbank, Lupus Street, Chelsea Bridge and beyond, with associated noise and pollution;

7.  Congestion at Pimlico Underground Station during peak hours.

Dear Petitioner, Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about the Nine Elms to Pimlico bridge. In his 2012 Manifesto, the Mayor pledged to examine the case for a new pedestrian and cycle river crossing as part of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea development. Work subsequently undertaken by Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that a new bridge is feasible. The bridge proposal is being developed by the London Borough of Wandsworth and the competition to identify possible designs will conclude this autumn. The relevant London Boroughs – Wandsworth, Westminster and Lambeth – with support from TfL and the Greater London Authority, are keen to ensure the backing of the local communities on both sides of the river. This will remain an important factor in the future direction of this project. Yours sincerely Public Liaison Officer Greater London Authority

Further to my previous post, I have now met with a number of residents who have concerns about the proposed bridge and have been in touch with TfL to try to understand the status of the proposal, timescale and to raise some of the issues I have picked up. It is very clear that the bridge is being driven by Wandsworth Council. The final bridge designer is due to be announced shortly from the four firms/consortia that were shortlisted. This is the selection of the designer not the final bridge design. Clearly any planning application will need to have the support of both Wandsworth and Westminster Councils through their planning committees. I am not clear whether Westminster will support the plans given the significant issues that are emerging regarding open space on the Westminster side. Of course, the Mayor of London can always take over the planning application. The landing options on the Westminster side are critical and unless a suitable solution is found that does not damage the area, then I will withdraw my initial support for this bridge. I have been urging TfL to focus its energies on the much needed pedestrian and cycle bridge between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf.
