My family are going to be made homeless within the next couple of months.  Our landlord has started an accelerated eviction process, which means that even though we have always paid our rent for the eight years we have been there and there are no anti-social disorders against us, our eviction has jumped to the head of the queue.  My partner has long-term medical conditions which means he cannot work and we are claiming Universal Credit.

Unless there is an error in the eviction notice, there is no hearing and even though we can now put in a COVID defence it makes ultimately no difference to our eviction.  Ironically, had we not paid our rent, our eviction process would have gone through to a court hearing and we could have put forward our case.

In this government’s manifesto, they said they would be abolishing ‘No Fault’ Section 21s. Calls have been made by the opposition and Shelter for the Conservative government to uphold their promise on this. The government have responded by saying this is not the right time economically.  This surely is absolutely the right time.  How critical does the situation need to become?

The number in people viewing rental properties has risen dramatically, so much so that sometimes it is impossible to even get a viewing.  Unfortunately some landlords are still unwilling to rent to people receiving Universal Credit which continuously puts us at the bottom of the list.

This is a human rights infringement that needs to be addressed immediately - not when hundreds if not thousands of people are going to lose their homes.
