The DA Bill had its third reading in Parliament on 6th June 2020. Whilst this is great news, the Government could have saved more lives by passing a proposed amendment which would have made non fatal strangulation a specific crime. Sadly this wasn't done and our only hope is now in the next stage...The House of Lords!
Please write as a matter of urgency to your local peer in the House of Lords and ask that they back this. Please attach the link to my petition and my survey which is found on my website www.sutda.org on the petitions page.
Strangulation is the second most common cause of death for women as a result of domestic violence, after stabbing. It is a known indicator for homicide, with attacks on women involving strangulation increasing the risk of death eightfold (Julie Bindel, see below article)
NFS is a tactic used by perpetrators to terrify victims and send out the clear message that, if they wanted, they could easily end a victim's life. It also leaves many women with permanent health problems; the effects of NFS is thought to be the second most common cause of stroke in women under the age of 40.
