Introduce a limit on the number of flights a person can take per year to reduce emissions.

The Issue

We need to limit the number of flights that an individual can take in 1 year in order to cut down on carbon emissions created by planes.

Aircraft emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are linked to lung damage, doubled since 1990 and are forecast to rise 43% by 2035: see European Aviation Environmental Report 2016 - https://ec.europa.eu/transport/sites/transport/files/modes/air/aviation-strategy/documents/european-aviation-environmental-report-2016-72dpi.pdf

The current number of planes and air traffic is contributing hugely to global warming as well as damaging human health.

The Government must create a cap on flights for individuals and take meaningful action to protect the planet. A suggested ceiling number is 1 long haul return flight (4+ hours) and 2 short haul return flights per year per person. To protect business where flying is currently necessary, an option for further flights could exist provided that the individual offsets the carbon emission usage with initiatives such as paying for a ‘carbon equivalent’ number of trees to be planted.

We need to act now to reduce carbon emissions and try to prevent further melting of the ice caps and sea levels rising, as well as protect the health of humans across the world.
