Free travel for University students in Full Time Education

The Issue

As university students, we believe the fare to travel to and from university is unfairly expensive, even with the 18+ Oyster and 16-25 Railcard.

Students are constantly traveling in London- most London universities don’t have a centralised campus, plus with local accommodation so expensive, lots of students travel miles to attend uni from home.

Many of us have to pay a ridiculous amount of money in order to attend a lecture that is only an hour long- which results in students being absent on days that they don’t have a busy schedule. When you’re a full time student, and part time work is hard to come by, you just can’t afford to travel back and forth across London.

Removing the fare for university students will motivate individuals to attend lectures regularly and will finally allow students to get the most out of their university and their degree.

We are young adults who are trying to achieve the best in life by taking the decision to get into further education. But right now that is difficult to do when we aren’t being adequately provided for.

We urge you to reconsider and please, fund our travel.

Dear Petitioner, Thank you for your petition submitted on the change.org website calling for free travel for university students in full-time education. The Mayor fully appreciates that the cost of travel is a key concern for Londoners, which is why he remains committed to bearing down on fares to ensure that they remain affordable. Last January he froze fares in real terms. As a result, Transport for London’s (TfL’s) peak and off-peak fares rose in line with inflation and season tickets rose just below, with all concessionary travel for young people, veterans, older and disabled Londoners protected. He has committed to freezing fares again from January 2016. TfL is a publicly-funded organisation and needs to use its funding in the most effective way. TfL already offers a wide range of concessions to help Londoners travel, including the 18+ Oyster photocard, which is one option that might be appropriate for university students. It gives reduced-rate travel to help London students get to college in London each day, often in the peak hours. To be eligible for the 18+ student discount, students must be enrolled on a full-time course of at least 15 tuition-led and/or structured learning hours a week (with attendance at scheduled classes being between Monday to Friday only, not including evening classes). So, the 15 hours can be made up of a mix of formal lectures and structured learning. This could mean that they have fewer than 15 hours of formal lectures each week. Given TfL already provides generous discounts for full-time students in London, I am afraid it does not have any current plans to introduce free travel on its services for university students.
