BRITISH BLACK CITIZENS COUNCIL REPRESENTED IN EVERY TOWN CITY & BOROUGH IN THE UK

The Issue

The world witnessed the murder of George Floyd in broad daylight. His death highlighted the blatant disregard for BLACK life. His death caused peaceful protests and riots all around the world and led people to decide enough is enough.

People of all ages, sexes, colours and backgrounds stood up for what they think is right "Equality". There is now a call for a BRITISH BLACK CITIZENS COUNCIL to be set up. Its role will be to address and eradicate the racism experienced by Black people in the U.K and find solutions that work to make the lives of UK Black citizens equal to everyone else. We understand other minority races have their struggles too and have noted they have established their own councils reporting to Government to be heard and effect change. There has to be a catalyst for change, so that future generations can fully integrate into the country of their birth.

The council will be set up to assist the Government in understanding, implementing and acting on issues facing UK Black citizens. A report conducted by the Cabinet office in 2017 and revised in 2018 identified that Black Citizens in the UK are disproportionately represented in areas such as: employment, education, judiciary, home ownership, university selection, job prospects, poverty, management positions, encounters with the police, medical etc.... This should not be the case and it's time to even the divide.

Despite the report concluding that there are SIGNIFICANT disparities between BLACK and WHITE citizens in the UK NOTHING SIGNIFICANT  has been done to change these findings. Nothing has really changed since the killing of Stephen Lawrence. Recent protests have witnessed people of all nationalities and backgrounds coming together and calling for change. We therefore call on the Prime Minister Boris Johnson to set up a BRITISH BLACK CITIZENS COUNCIL made up of elected members from every Town, City and Borough in the UK who will meet once a month to tackle discrimination issues. These representatives elected by the people for the people will liaise with Government on issues that affect Black British Citizens also giving them powers to implement change within their local communities and to break down racial tensions among other citizens, who through ignorance, fear and mis-understanding are seeing recent events such as the removal of statues (who's presence are controversial) as a slight on the history of Great Britain.

The Councils role will be to support the Government in its efforts to give all UK citizens access to equal opportunities which in turn will ensure they contribute positively to society. The council should be able to implement initiatives such as the teaching of Black History in schools (giving young black people a sense of identity and a sense of belonging). BLACK LIVES MATTER as do ALL LIVES MATTER and it's time the UNITED KINGDOM  was more than just that in name. It should be a place where if you follow the rule of law you have the same rights and opportunities as anyone else. Annette Dore
