Hello,

It has been a great news that Universal credit rates are increasing since April 2020.

But!!

As many people are losing jobs due to Covid 19 during current crisis, more and more people will be subject to a BENEFIT CAP.

In theory, the maximum benefit you receive (including child benefit, will be £1666 per month if you live outside London) so although the rates will go up and your rent is high (which was also increased as of April 2020), you will see NO INCREASE - only the increase in benefit cap reduction.

It is frustrating as this benefit does not recognise that some rents of social housing are higher depending on housing association. You might have the same circumstances like your friend who lives on the other side of the town, yet their rent is cheaper and they won't reach the maximum amount to be capped, they will have their UC increased, you on the other hand, will have even more taken away to live on, due to this change in rates. Also how can you compare rents charged just outside London and somewhere up North where rents are cheaper?

I believe in fairness. But why can't the benefit be capped in a fair way? The rent is paid, that is what the money is for. If my benefit is higher, because my rent is higher, I still need money to live on regardless, after paying my rent.

I suggest the benefit cap disregard the housing element and be reduced to a fair amount to live on, which will not discriminate certain groups of people based on the rent they are charged.
