Ban domesticated animal euthanasia for inhumane reasons

Ban domesticated animal euthanasia for inhumane reasons
The Issue
So, I wanted to put together a petition based on my thoughts and experiences so far in the animal world. Every day, animals within the UK such as cats, dogs and horses are put to sleep, in most cases without question, for inhumane reasons. These animals should only be put to sleep to prevent any additional pain through illness, old age or risk to human safety. Owners are willingly putting young healthy animals to sleep for reasons that can be controlled. I propose that the procedure of domesticated animal euthanasia is revised and action plans put in place based on the owners reason as to why they are no longer able to keep them, should they be fit and healthy. If they are classed as a risk to human safety, this should be determined through a thorough assessment of what owners perceive of bad behaviour and a number of interventions to be undertaken initally (such as training etc.) to assess firstly whether this behaviour can be rectified.
Reasons by owners for putting domesticated animals to sleep include:
- Owners moving accommodation
- Health conditions of owners
- Bad behaviour
- Not been able to afford the animal
- Horses that do not qualify to race or are unsuccessful in a particular discipline
Here is some evidence from a survey undertaken by the British Veterinary Association.....
98% of vets have been asked to euthanase healthy pets, with 53% saying that this is not a rare occurrence. And in nearly every case (98 per cent), “bad behaviour” on the part of the pet was the reason for the euthanasia request. Other reasons cited for “healthy euthanasia” included the poor health of the owner (48 per cent), owners moving to accommodation that is unsuitable for their pet (39 per cent), and legal enforcement reasons (32 per cent).
The truth behind race horses....

For thousands of British thoroughbreds that are too old, too slow or not good enough jumpers, the end is brutal: a bullet through the temple or a metal bolt into the side of the brain. Then their carcasses are loaded on to freezer lorries and driven to France, where their flesh is sold as gourmet meat. We reveal the two British slaughterhouses whose 'knackermen' kill more than 5,000 horses a year, many of which were bred to entertain punters and racegoers. Horses are domesticated animals that can be used for many other purposes other than for horse meat.
I also propose that the Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act is revised and would like to see the end to Breed Specific Legislation. The RSPCA are also behind this, after putting to sleep 81 dogs in 2017 due to their appearance. This legislation discriminates based on breed or looks instead of the individual dogs behaviour. Again, a thorough assessment should be undertaken and interventions completed (such as training etc.), to firstly determine whether this behaviour can or can not be rectified and should be based on each individual dog rather than by breed or "type". If an innocent dog fits this particular "type", in many cases they are put to sleep under BSL and this needs to change.
Anyone who feels that this is wrong and needs to change, please join me in signing this petition. This petition is isolated to domesticated animals only.
