NEW TRAILS NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
The Issue
If you are a trail user, outdoor enthusiast, dog walker or just love experiencing nature, we need your support to fight back against the special interest groups seeking to eliminate your new trails.
Did you know that the Routt County Commissioners have requested an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Mad Rabbit Trail Project, even though it has already successfully cleared the Environmental Assessment (EA) process? This comprehensive, multi-year evaluation involved input from Forest Service wildlife specialists, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW and many other scientists and experts.
It's crucial to recognize that this final phase of the Mad Rabbit trails project has been under scrutiny for nearly five years. Each additional year it remains under "review" incurs costs borne by our taxpayers, funds that could otherwise be utilized to implement the plan and commence the much-needed improvements to our local trail system.
Some have described this project as "massive," but let's look at the facts. The plan aims to close 36 miles of user-created trails, primarily in remote and otherwise unfragmented areas, while simultaneously constructing about 40 miles of new trail, much of it along the US40 highway corridor. It's a balanced approach that seeks to benefit both recreation and conservation.
It's worth noting that this plan received approval from over 70% of local voters, emphasizing the widespread community support for a better trail system.
However, the recent objection letter from the Routt County Commissioners to the US Forest Service dated 9/12/23 has raised concerns. It requests an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), a process typically reserved for projects with significant human impacts, such as coal mines or oilfields. We believe that such a step would only serve to delay progress and increase costs for local taxpayers.
We want to ensure that this project benefits all trail users—hikers, runners, and mountain bikers alike. It's an opportunity for our local community, especially our kids, to enjoy improved outdoor recreational opportunities.
Your voice matters. Let's encourage the Routt County Commissioners to reconsider their objection letter and instead support the advancement of the Mad Rabbit Trails Project, promoting a vibrant and inclusive outdoor experience for everyone in our community.
Join us in embracing progress and opposing unnecessary delays like the requested EIS!
