Bonner: Help us put the Great Barrier Reef first this election

Bonner: Help us put the Great Barrier Reef first this election

The issue

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef ecosystem on our blue planet – and it needs your vote this election to survive.

Populations of turtles and dugongs are dwindling, their staple diet - seagrass - is rapidly disappearing and corals are suffering from the worst bleaching event on record.

We’re asking you to stand up for the Reef by asking your local candidate to support a comprehensive plan to protect the Great Barrier Reef and to grow jobs in our tourism industry.

If election candidates hear enough voices they will know this is an issue that cannot be ignored.

The Reef is home to huge numbers of fish, coral, turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks and rays. It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and is dearly loved by locals and visitors alike.

The Reef also supports 69,000 jobs and generates $6 billion every year to the Queensland economy. Tourism, fishing and research organisations all rely on the Reef.

Queensland needs a healthy Reef for a strong economy, now and in the future.

Make your vote count. Pledge to put the Reef first this election.
