Dear Supporter,
In November 2018 a resounding majority of Californians passed "The Prevention of Cruelty to Farm Animals Act", also known as Prop. 12. This law represents the strongest farm animal protection law in the world, and requires that eggs, veal, and pork produced or sold in California are from facilities that do not use extreme confinement methods. This includes meat and eggs produced in other states. The most game-changing element of Prop. 12 is around the use of gestation crates. Starting January 1, 2022, compliance with Prop. 12 means that mother pigs cannot be confined in gestation crates for any part of their pregnancy cycle -- including the first six weeks. Gestation crates are so small that the pig cannot even stretch her legs or turn around!
Will Costco comply with these new legal requirements? While Costco says its fresh pork supply chain will be gestation crate free by 2022, its probable major pork suppliers remain committed (beyond 2022) to locking up pigs in gestation crates for the first part of their pregnancy cycle.
Action: Tell Costco to sell pork that will not violate Prop. 12!

"California's Prop.12 banning gestation crates sends a loud and clear message: consumers reject cruel crate confinement and want more humane food options. I agree! Retailers are responsible for the well being of all the animals in their supply chain, and I hope that Costco lives up to its promise for a crate free supply chain. I want to buy pork that is 100% gestation crate free."
