Investigate the Cowlitz County Jail for Prisoner Abuse and Neglect

The Issue

Numerous people have died while in custody at the Cowlitz County Jail. In the space of only 9 months from 2013-2014, 4 people - Jenny Lynn Borelis, Stephanie Jo Deal, Daniel Dee Bush, and Cameron K. Kuanoni - died resulting from entirely preventable neglect and lack of medical care and supervision. They were not the first deaths in recent years at the county Jail, and there are numerous accounts of abusive practices and an ongoing pattern of neglect by the staff there. Such incidents include the denial of medical care to the pregnant Julia Weed as she miscarried in the jail after being beaten by Longview PD, and the deliberate starvation and abuse of Davida Sanchez. The Cowlitz County Sheriff's office has done little to investigate these matters, and the burden has been left to the families of the victims to seek some form of justice through civil courts. The employees of the county are civil servants, and have the duty and obligation to ensure the safety and security of the people placed in their care. They have failed, and abused their position. No one should receive a death sentence by spending time at the county jail. Please launch an independent criminal investigation immediately into these heinous human rights abuses at the Cowlitz County Jail, and bring the perpetrators to justice! Justice for the Cowlitz County 4, and everyone who has been abused at the hands of the county!
