Please Lift the Backyard Chicken Ban in New Kent, VA

The Issue

There are many people in Virginia’s New Kent County who can benefit from backyard chickens. This is a popular topic that improves quality of life and community. Citizens look favorably on local governments that do not restrict outdoor, backyard activities. The values added to the community far outweigh any concerns people may have with residential chickens.

Chickens can be fun friendly pets.

Chickens are very educational for children. They can help children learn how to care for animals, understand where food comes from, and watch a chick grow and develop.

They provide food security for families

They lay healthier eggs than store bought eggs (longer shelf life too).

They control insect pests.

I have done some research and do not see anything that clarifies why chickens were banned from New Kent County, VA. Many surrounding counties and even cities allow backyard chickens up to 15 feet from neighbors. New Kent County allows residential horses, but not chickens. New Kent County assesses taxes for "chicken coops" located on many residential properties while not allowing chickens on those same R-1 zoned properties. It just seems reasonable that New Kent should allow chickens.

Other animals like dogs and horses are allowed on properties zoned for Residential use. Chickens are much quieter and less dangerous than dogs and horses.

Please join in this plea to remove the ban on backyard chickens. Even if you are not personally interested in keeping chickens, lifting this ban may bring you a neighbor who will share his/her fresh, organic eggs.
