Moms Who Want Schools Open started this petition to Board of Education for Carroll County Public Schools

The purpose of this petition is to urge the Carroll County Board of Education to vote to open schools in January 2021 with the hybrid option.  Parents should be given the option to send their children to school. Prolonged school closures have a clear negative impact on children's health, education and development, family income and the overall economy.

The statistics that are being analyzed by the board of education to consider opening schools are not specific enough or relevant. The board isn’t looking at the age of people in the ICU to know if the amount of people hospitalized would really be impacted by schools opening. According to the CDC, people over the age of 65 are five times more likely to be hospitalized and children ages 5 to17 are 9 times less likely to be hospitalized. Have hospitalizations due to COVID-19 really increased in areas around the world where schools are open?

Why is it that public schools are closed, but non-essential services can remain open? Gyms, hair salons, and restaurants can operate at limited capacities, but schools cannot? Why is our children's education being put on the back burner?  Private schools in Carroll County have been operating in person successfully since September. Why can private schools be open at full capacity but public schools can’t open at limited capacities? Keeping schools closed is going to widen the gap between privileged children and those with fewer means.

Remote learning is not an adequate substitution for in person learning. Many children who were thriving in-person are now failing and do not have the resources they need to catch up. Teachers are not able to give many students the attention they need in an online environment. The success of remote learning really depends on if children, especially those of elementary school age, have an adult to guide them. Many women are being forced to quit their jobs to ensure that their children have a half decent education. Many women cannot afford to leave the workforce and their children are suffering as a result.

School districts all around the world show that schools play little, if any, role in the spread of COVID-19. Why are other countries prioritizing education and we are not?
