Name the field to Coach "Don Castulo Perez Sr.” & Nominate to EC Sports Hall of Fame
The Issue
Before coming to the United States he played for the Reserve Team of the Mexican Professional Team, Club Toluca in 1960. Upon arriving to this area of the country he was the only Mexican to play with the amateur team Polish National Alliance Club of the Indiana Harbor. He began working at Inland Steel in 1962. In 1966, he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He played in the U.S. Army League and was the leading goal scorer with 33 goals before leaving to Vietnam. In 1970, he was the founding member of the two most powerful soccer clubs Northwest Indiana has ever had, Inter Mexico Soccer Club and Club East Chicago Azteca. He coached both clubs to multiple titles over a course of 20 years.
This astonishing man spent 28 years of service for E.C. Boys Soccer Program in one capacity or another since 1988. He has been the brains behind this program for over 20 years helping to lead the program to one undefeated regular season and multiple sectional championship appearances, including its first sectional win in 2008. Throughout his tenure, he has tried to retire on two previous occasions but the parents and students would not allow him. He was much more than just a soccer coach; he was a mentor to hundreds of students. He taught the fundamentals to succeed in life. Players has learned a lot from this man. He has influences players to go beyond their expectations. Now his formers players are doctors, engineers, lawyers, scientists, mathematicians, and many more.
On behalf of the E.C. Central Soccer Family would like to humbly make a few requests. We feel that the new soccer field should be named after Coach “Don Castulo Perez Sr.” Also, there is not one soccer representative in the East Chicago Sports Hall of Fame. There is no bigger name in E.C. Soccer than Castulo Perez Sr. We feel that after so many years of service and impacting so many lives, that he is worthy of that honor. Thank you for your time.
