Westwood Main Pool - restricted use for families

The Issue

This petition has been created to propose the adults-only portion of the main pool be relocated from the sunledge to a different area of the main pool; such that families with children can have access to and use the only shallow portion of the main pool.

The sunledge is the shallow (1 ft. deep) area, directly across the pool from the diving well. The original plan for that area, and the enforcement of which is currently being discussed by the Sports Committee, is to restrict that area to adults 21 years and older. An adults-only section of the pool is an idea many of us support, and will happily enjoy when we are at the pool without children. The issue with the current proposal, however, is the location of the adults-only section. Specifically, the proposed location for the adult-only area is the only shallow portion of the main pool; it is also the only practical entry and usage point for both children and adult members with disabilities. Proceeding with this rule is not practical for families (multiple children at different ages or new/developing swimmers, meaning the children’s pool can’t be the only option) and presents serious safety concerns for all members. Further, it does not promote an inclusive environment that embraces the varying needs of all members.

Young swimmers who have outgrown the children’s pool and are ready to continue their swim development in the larger pool, still need a safe space to practice. The best place to gain further confidence in their abilities is in the main pool, with access to the shallowest portion. This area also provides a more direct entry point for lifeguards if needed, as well as parents who may be caring for other children while monitoring their excited new swimmer.

A recent compromise has been proposed, which would allow families/children access to the sunledge before 4:00PM on weekdays and before noon on weekends. While we applaud finding a workable compromise, that particular attempt does not solve the safety issue, still restricts use of the only shallow portion of the main pool, and also doesn’t help families with dual working parents who cannot use the pool during those weekday hours. That decision, in addition to considering the use of punitive measures (such as fines) for those in violation of the sunledge rule, will be discussed during two upcoming meetings (Sports Committee meeting on 4/19 and House Committee meeting on 4/21).

As families with small children of different ages, the sunledge is the perfect (and currently only) portion of the main pool that allows us to safely monitor and assist our early/learning swimmers while concurrently being close to our youngest children. We propose that the adult-only area of the pool not be eliminated, simply moved to another area of the pool where the result isn't the exclusion of a large portion of the Westwood membership base. We want all members to be able to be able to safely enjoy our beautiful new facilities.
